Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Artists will have the opportunity to submit work for consideration through an online application when it is available in the fall. Curators review submissions and contact all artists within 3 months after deadline.

Glyndor Gallery
Two thematic group exhibitions are curated in Wave Hill’s Glyndor Gallery each year. Artworks are borrowed or new works are created for exhibition. The gallery occupies 3 rooms and other ancillary spaces on the main floor of the Georgian Revival house. Exhibitions generally combine painting, sculpture, works on paper, installation, photography and some video. The rooms are flexible with excellent natural light but cannot be fully darkened. We are reviewing artists for future shows, with works that reflect themes related to nature. In particular, we are preparing for an exhibition exploring environmental and land art and a show centered on nature and mythology.

Wave Hill House
Artists exhibit two-dimensional work on the walls of common areas in Wave Hill House for a period of 4 to 9 months. Artists will be selected to display a body of work in the café and reception area, and for small solo shows in the tearoom. Paintings, drawings, prints and photographs that engage with themes related to nature will be considered for these spaces.

Winter Workspace Program
From January to April, galleries are turned over to artists to use as studios for 6-week sessions. We encourage artists who are interested in studying our plant collection and responding to the natural setting. Artists have an opportunity to share their practice with visitors through participatory workshops. This program offers workspace, not living space. A nomination process is used to select artists for the program in 2023 that includes artists who submit through General Opportunities.

Artists with projects that address the natural world are welcome to submit proposals for future consideration. Due to the high number of submissions we receive, we will only respond to those artists whose work fits the programs to be planned. All unsolicited performing arts proposals must be sent through our submissions form.

The Sunroom Project Space is a venue for New York-area emerging artists to develop a site-specific project as a solo exhibition at Wave Hill. The two exhibition spaces for 2024 are the windowed Sunroom and Sun Porch in Glyndor Gallery. We are seeking artist projects that engage with the site, Wave Hill’s history, other aspects of the grounds, or surrounding communities.

Projects in any media will be considered. Four artists will be selected for solo exhibitions. Selected artists will receive an honorarium of $2000, exhibition support, and professional development. Artists will have 6 to 12 months to develop their ideas and create new work.

Eligibility:

• Emerging artist in the early stages of their career
• Lives within a 50-mile radius of the Bronx
• Has a record of achievement and potential
• Must not be a student, not represented by a commercial gallery, and has not previously shown at Wave Hill

Artists may submit their proposals for consideration through this online application. Applications will be reviewed by a jury comprising Wave Hill’s curatorial staff, an invited curator, and a previous Sunroom and Van Lier artist. The same jury will review the Sunroom Project Space and Van Lier Fellowship applications. The Van Lier Fellowship applicants will also be considered for the Sunroom Project Space alone; there is no need to submit two separate applications for these two different opportunities. While the Van Lier Fellowship has specific eligibility requirements, emerging artists of any age are welcome to apply for the Sunroom Project Space. This one-year fellowship, administered on behalf of the Edward and Sally Van Lier Fund of the New York Community Trust, is awarded to two New York City-based artists, who are age 30 or younger (born 1993 or after) and not currently enrolled in a degree-granting program nor have been a Van Lier Fellow in another organization.

The fellowship provides emerging artists from historically underrepresented communities with mentorship opportunities with the curatorial staff, artists and arts professionals to prepare and promote their projects and to define career paths over the course of the program (January - December 2024). Fellows will be given a studio space during the Winter Workspace Program and a solo show in the Sunroom Project Space in the fall. (See floor plans and images below.)

Each Van Lier Fellow receives a $10,435 stipend, which includes a $8,000 honorarium, studio rental reimbursement, transportation stipend for the residency, and professional development. The goal is to develop the skills and professional experience needed to establish a successful career in art. Fellows will participate in an 6-week Winter Workspace program (February 21 – April 2, 2024); create a solo show in the Sunroom Project Space (mid-August – late-September 2024); receive career mentoring and proposal development support; work with staff to observe artist selection process; and interact with the public through the Winter Workspace program and have an artist talk during the exhibition in the Sunroom Project Space.

Eligibility: Applicants must be emerging artists 30 years of age or younger (born 1993 or after); from historically underrepresented communities; demonstrate financial need; live in one of the 5 boroughs of New York City; have completed college and are not enrolled in a degree-granting program in 2024; demonstrate artistic and career potential; are not represented by a commercial gallery; available to participate in Winter Workspace and Sunroom Project Space; and cannot have been a Van Lier Fellow in another organization. While the Van Lier Fellowship has specific eligibility requirements, emerging artists of any age are welcome to apply for the Sunroom Project Space (see open call description above).

Current Van Lier Fellows are Deep Pool and Amina Ross, and past Fellows include Jake Brush, Katherine Miranda, Salvador Muñoz, TJ Shin, Emily Oliveira, Duy Hoàng, Ashton Agbomenou, Yelaine Rodriquez, Doreen Garner, Ariel Jackson, Beatrice Glow, Tammy Nguyen, Onyedika Chuke and Cameron Rowland.
